What is the 4" HD format?
In this case, HD does not imply higher resolution. Rather, it rather refers to the 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio used as a standard in HDTV technology. The 16:9 ratio has been available in professional digital cameras for some time. It is now an option in many recent point-and-shoot cameras, along with the 4:3 and 3:2 ratios. 4" HD prints have a width of approximately 7" and a height of 4".
Are your panoramic and 4x7 HD format pictures getting cut off? The image aspect ratio may be to blame.
Most digital cameras produce pictures with one of two common aspect ratios: 3:2 and 4:3. The HD format is an additional photo format used by HD digital cameras, camcorders, and in the panoramic modes of many digital cameras. It uses a 16:9 ratio, which means it’s a different shape (or aspect ratio) than a standard photo.
If your prints are getting unintentionally cropped or cut off, it’s likely because the aspect ratio of the digital photo doesn’t match the dimensions of the photo paper. Some of the image is bound to get lost.
If your HD photos are getting chopped, you have a couple of options:
- Print in our new 4x7 HD print size. Now you can print the entire frame, as you shot it, without having to worry about cropping. There’s nothing simpler.
- 2. If you’d rather stick with 4x6 (photo albums do tend to accommodate that size more easily), you can still do that. Crop before you print, and you’ll ensure the important parts of your photo don’t get chopped off. Simply double click on your picture to open the cropping tool.
So what exactly is an aspect ratio and what does it have to do with my prints?
The aspect ratio is the relationship between the width and height of the photo. Digital cameras produce pictures with two common aspect ratios: 3:2 and 4:3. Common print dimensions are based on those ratios. Here’s a list of common print sizes and their aspect ratios.
| Print Size |
Aspect Ratio |
| 4x6 |
3:2 |
| 4x7(HD) |
16:9 |
| 5x7 |
7:5 |
| 8x10 |
5:4 |
| 20x30 |
3:2 |
So crop your photos to fit the paper before you print. It’s a simple fix, and you’ll never have to worry about accidentally cropping people (or key parts of them) out of your pictures again.
Can I share my photos online?
There are many good online photo sharing options out there, and we’re not looking to compete with them. Instead, we will interface with them so that you can easily print photos that you’ve already got stored on these sites. This development is underway, so check back soon. If you want us to hook up with a particular site, we’d love to know about it. Please email us with your suggestion at support@support.kwikpix.ca
MY PROJECTS
I saved my project to work on it later. How do I reload it?
Select the product category (i.e. photobooks) and click on the "Get started" button. Our software will detect any saved projects and let you continue working on them, provided that the photos and data files are still in the same project folder on your computer.
Where are my saved projects stored?
Projects are stored in Silverlight’s reserved storage. Please note that manually cleaning up the Silverlight storage will delete all saved projects and pending orders.
SHIPPING & HANDLING
Why don't you ship everywhere in Canada?
We can ship to any Canadian address outside of the Province of Quebec. Shipping to Quebec is not available due to exclusive agreements between our photo lab provider and other clients, otherwise we would be happy to serve Quebec residents as well.
PAYMENT
What forms of payment do you accept?
We currently accept Visa and Mastercard. If you prefer to use another means of payment, let us know by sending in your suggestions to support@support.kwikpix.ca. We are always looking for your feedback so we can meet your needs and serve you better.
SOFTWARE ISSUES
What exactly do you install on my computer, and how safe is it?
The first thing we do is check if your computer already supports Silverlight technology from Microsoft. If it does not, we’ll give you the option of automatically installing the Silverlight plug-in (this is perfectly safe and requires no reloading of any sort). Your browser will then download what is commonly called a "rich-content web application". Basically, what that means is the application runs directly from your browser, not from the underlying operating system. The application needs access to your files in order to create a project folder and let you edit photos without changing the originals. The application will not alter your registry or any system file.
What operating systems do you support?
We currently support Windows 7, Vista and XP platform for all products offered.
As well we support Mac OS 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6 with the Silverlight plug-in for prints and enlargements only.
Note: Currently our Photobooks, Calendars, Collages and Greeting Cards products are offered only under the Windows platform.
Our development team is at work to provide a complete Mac site integration later this year.
Why does the Silverlight configuration window reports such a high hard drive space usage?
All projects are saved in Silverlight’s storage. Every cart item that has not yet been uploaded is also stored in this specific location on your hard drive.
